Humans Vs. Wildlife
We are always told to respect the non-talking partners of the environment. Instead of according that respect, we hunt them, cause discomfort, destroy their habitats, and cage them instead of letting them free, domesticate and even chain and torture them in the name of imparting skills for the sake of tourism.
How selfish is the human race towards wildlife?
What have we done? We have decided to feast on any living thing on earth. We care less whether they are safe for consumption or not. Ours is about the stomach’s sake, not biodiversity nor a balanced earth’s equation.
Here we are facing a global pandemic. A monster that has costed several lives; destabilized the day-to-day operations of both young and old; rich and poor; third-world and superpower nations. THE PLANET IS CLOSED FOR REPAIRS! Coronavirus, better known as COVID-19, is a source of misery.
Scientists confirmed the virus was first transmitted from animals to humans. The genesis of this is the consumption of bats by some humans-so they say.
Covid-19 on Human life
Now, see your life! You are barred from your daily activities; you may not see your family and friends for a little longer. You are confined to that tiny space. If you are lucky to go out, your time is limited and must demonstrate to the authorities that you leaving your small confinement is genuine and warranted.
What have we done to ourselves? Do we deserve this? For how long will this happen?
I mean, if it was not for our greed and lack of wisdom, we could not be where we are now.
Coronavirus is not the only pandemic that is transmitted from animals to humans. We have Hantavirus, swine flu, Spanish flu, among others. As if Covid-19 is not warning enough, we learned of death as a result of Hantavirus because the individual fed on a rat. SERIOUSLY!
Most of these viruses transmitted from animals to humans have no cure or scientifically proven treatment as medics and scientists state.
Covid-19 should be a wake-up call
Covid-19 should be a wakeup call. A reminder that we need to stay away from wildlife and instead promote their protection and conservation.
Covid-19 reminds us why we should leave nature as pure as it was before man’s greed. It is the time to restore factory settings and stick to what was typically considered edible flesh. Human adventures and discoveries will bring more harm to our health and damage the environment.
It is through feasting on uncommon animal species that we drive rare species to extinction. Besides, climate change stares at us, causing more graving damages to wildlife.
Saving wildlife is impossible if the same animals are considered a significant human food that retails expensively. Placing a high price tag on such animals not only increases market demand but prompts mass hunting resulting in extinction.
Therefore, if we survive Covid-19, let’s make it an individual obligation to conserve wildlife lest nature strike back at us.
What you should do
To portray our commitment and value for wildlife going forward, the torturing of animals should come to an end. For instance, the chaining and torturing of elephants in most Asian countries have become a tragedy to the elephant family. Humanizing them to learn specific skills does not come blatantly, it involves massive beating that affects the mental, psychological, and physical well-being of these animals, ultimately curtailing their ability to reproduce freely.
Poaching and illegal hunting in most African countries should be brought to an end. Killing animals for aesthetic purposes and prestige is a past activity that should not be activated in 2020. It will make sense to commit to initiatives that seek to foster the progression of different animal species. Rescue but don’t domesticate wildlife.
